Independent or Dependent

I can remember growing up and being told to get good grades in school so one day it would position me to get a good job so I can go out in the world and provide for myself.  One day I would need to be able to move out on my own and be independent from my parents when it came to food, clothing and shelter.  The focus was being an independent man contributing positively to the world.

I’m RW and let’s have a fireside chat about “Are you Independent or Dependent?”

Here on Earth as a baby we grow and mature to become independent of our Earthly mother and father..  When we become teenagers we want to go places like the mall or movies on our own. When our parents leave home at times we want to stay at home on our own.   As we get older we cannot wait to get out on our own to have our own place to live.  We seek to have our own car to drive.  Today teenagers want the latest technology including a smart phone, computer,  and tablet.  In so many words we want to be our own independent person, independent from our Earthly parents.

When it comes to our Heavenly Father our view should be a total 180, the total opposite of our view of maturity and independence compared to our Earthly parents (father).   We should be 100% dependent on the Lord God.  Without that dependence we can do nothing.  John 15:4-5Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” We are so trained and programed to be independent and figure things out on our own from the time we are children that we have a distorted view of what our relationship should be with our Heavenly Father.  I remember hearing these words “RW if you want to accomplish your goals and dreams in life you have depend on yourself.  Do not expect anyone to have empathy on you or be willing to help”.  But the Lord wants us to seek him and depend on him.  Jeremiah 29:13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”  He also said in Philippians 4:13 that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This is through Him implying 100% dependence on Him.

Here are some other scriptures that show we need to be dependent on Lord God (The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit).

Philippians 4:19

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus”

John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

John 3:18

Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

John 6:63

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life

John 3:17

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him

Jeremiah 17:5-8

This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.  That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.  It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

When it comes to the LORD,  we need to grow and mature by getting closer to Him and depend more on Him.  No one accidentally becomes more spiritually mature.  Spiritual growth requires a diligent pursuit of God.  It requires being dependent.

God is the source of all spiritual development; you cannot neglect Him and expect to mature.”
