The Words You Speak
In May 2014 the National Basketball Association (NBA) had a situation with one of the team owners that made some comments that were not so pleasant. The comments caused a media fire storm for the owner, the team players, and the city where the team plays. His words had so much impact on the team’s future and his future as an NBA owner.
I’m RW and let’s have a fireside chat about “The Words You Speak”
The words that we speak can be used to build up or tear down. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:21a “The tongue has the power of life and death”. The tongue if used incorrectly can destroy relationships, start wars, and destroy trust just to name a few. Our words should be used to build others up Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” We should not use our speech to speak evil or deceit (Psalm 34:13). Let me ask the old saying “Do you think before you speak?” When you are upset do you take the time to seek God for guidance on what to say or how to respond?
Our words are so powerful. Once we say the words they are out and we cannot pull them back. James 3:5-8 – “5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. We cannot control it only the Lord God can guide us and help us to control it. How do others view you after hearing you speak? Would they experience The Lord God in you? We should be a pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved (2 Corinthians 2:15).
The NBA owner was talking not knowing his conversation was being recorded. Later the person that had the recording played it to the news media and then it was made public. We as Christians should always remember that it does not matter if someone is recording our words we speak. We should always use or speech for good and not bad (lying, gossiping, flattery, and anger). We must remember The Lord Jesus is always listening. Psalms 37:30 – “The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just”. Proverbs 12:22 NLT – “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth” and Proverbs 15:28 – “The heart of the godly thinks carefully before speaking; the mouth of the wicked overflows with evil words.”
